Programme Duration: Two Year Full Time

India occupies tenth position among the industrialised nations of the world. Following the liberalisation policy by the Government of India, new industries and technologies are being developed. India plans to spend US$ 1.4 trillion on infrastructure projects during the current five-year plan to ensure a sustainable development in the country. However, such a large-scale growth of Infrastructural development may fail if appropriate occupational health, safety, and environmental policies are not implemented in organizations. Further, with the onset of pandemic and technological advancement, adoption of automation in various sector without proper capacity building may also lead to accidents, injuries, occupational health hazards, pollution of air, water and land. In short, it may adversely impact the health and environment of people involved in these developmental activities. To deal with such problems and to find out appropriate feasible and cost-effective solution, there is a vital need to train health, safety, and environment professionals in the country. This can be achieved by introducing academic programmes and ensuing skill-based learning in the areas of health, safety, and environment. NICMAR University has realized the importance of the above issues faced by the projects and industries. Through the industry-institute interaction, it has commenced the Master of Business Administration in Health, Safety, and Environmental Management (MBA HSEM) in the School of Energy and Environment to serve the industries with trained and qualified personnel.

This Master level program has been crafted to address the vital need for up-skilling employees in the field of health, safety and environmental management. The multi-disciplinary MBA HSEM builds upon the concepts and methodologies of management, environment, health and safety, legal aspects, information technology and behavioural sciences. It combines theory with practice and facilitates analytical learning through the programme’s academic structure. In the field of health and safety, the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) provides internationally recognized certification for skill development. In tune with this, the MBA HSEM program will be unique and value-added as it will aide with the NEBOSH certification process to become qualified professionals which is more sought after by leading organizations world-wide. Thus, young entrants and working professionals alike hold better chance to enhance and hone their skills through this one-of-a-kind programme in the country. The programme is completely employer focused and the candidate can choose three career pathways that include: Health, Safety and Environmental Management; Occupational Health and Safety Management or Environmental Management.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

The MBA in Health, Safety and Environmental Management has a curriculum design that broadly falls under the following streams: The students are offered a wide choice of course that suit their career interests and goals. The first-year curriculum includes various general management courses apart from program core courses to improve students’ understanding of key aspects in business management and communication. During the second year, the specialised areas of industry are introduced to develop in-depth knowledge in the field of health, safety and environment.

The theoretical courses aim to improve the students' understanding of fundamental principles. Practical experience is gained through summer internship. It is further strengthened by the project work undertaken by the students. Research oriented courses such as the final research-based dissertation develop the ability of scientific analysis of a problem and enhance report writing skills. The curriculum is thus a blend of theoretical and applied courses focusing to prepare professionals to be industry acquiescent.

That apart, the unique value addition to this programme will be the NEBOSH national general certificate in occupational health and safety. We at NICMAR University Pune will provide support to train the students to appear for this certification. Students will thus have an opportunity to participate in this value addition program apart from their regular courses which is over and above the regular curriculum for enhancing the skills and requirements at the National (say, for Multinational Companies in India) and Global level.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The aim of the programme is to develop leaders with techno-managerial understanding to manage projects and organisations in the realm of Health, Safety and Environment in India and abroad, with the following distinct competencies:

  • Managing the safety, health and environmental aspects with knowledge and expertise in health issues, safe handling of materials and machinery, safe work practices, standard operating procedures, and establish emergency action procedure.
  • Compliance of all statutory obligations of the employer with regard to health and safety of personnel and structures, and security of environment.
  • Guiding and assisting the site managers/ engineers to make their sites safe and accident free.
  • Training the personnel in safety, undertaking safety surveys and designing suitable documents for recording and promoting safety at work places.
  • Establishing the learning experience within the context of construction application and thus enabling the integration of theoretical knowledge with best industrial practice in health, safety, welfare and environmental sustainability

PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

PSO1: Understand the health, safety and environmental aspects of work practices, standard operating procedures, and establish emergency action procedures.

PSO2: Comprehend and comply with all statutory obligations of the employer with regard to health and safety of personnel and security of environment.

PSO3: Apply the concepts of health and safety in projects and assess its performance to make their sites safe, accident free adhering to environmental compliance.

PSO4: Train personnel to undertake safety surveys and design suitable measures for recording and promoting safety at the work place and also, train personnel in environmental impact assessment and management of operations and maintenance services.

PSO5: Establish the learning experience within the context of industry and construction application, thus enabling the integration of theoretical knowledge with best Industrial practices including sustainability.
